About a month into the joint operation against the Naxals, Home Minister P Chidambaram is slated to visit Chhattisgarh on Friday to carry out a review of the police offensive, with the focus likely to be on the need to back armed action with development initiatives in areas where forces have gained control.
The authorities are also planning to extend the operation into new areas on the border of Chhattisgarh and Orissa. The operations are currently going on in two areas — one on the Chhattisgarh-Maharashtra border and the other on the Chhattisgarh-Jharkhand border.
For this reason, Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has been invited for the meeting. Maharashtra Home Minister R R Patil and the DGPs of Orissa and Maharashtra will also attend the meeting besides Raman Singh, the Chief Minister of the host state .
Chidambaram is being accompanied by a high-level team of security and intelligence officials from Delhi, including chiefs of CRPF and ITBP and the IB Director. “The two-hour meeting is expected to discuss the requirements of Chhattisgarh, Orissa and Maharashtra, strategies to step up joint operations against Naxalites, particularly in the border areas, by ensuring greater coordination between these states,” senior police sources said.
