On a day when chief ministers from the BJP ruled states were showering praises on Union Home Minister P Chidambaram’s style of functioning, Chidambaram did not hesitate from indulging in some straight talk with the Chief Minister of Congress-ruled Maharashtra. Attempting to imply that the laws needed to be made stricter to deal with forces like the Shiv Sena and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, sources said, was cut short by Chidambaram who is learnt to have told Chavan that enough laws were available in the statute book and that his government should not hesitate to take action against forces promoting divisive tendencies.
The Home Minister, sources added, also told Chavan that he will send him a note on this matter. Chavan, it is learnt, was also told that the entire country was watching Maharashtra and was expecting the state government to take action against the trouble-makers
