The death toll in the Gyaneshwari Express derailment in West Midnapore district on Saturday rose to 110 after more bodies were extricated from the wrecked coaches of the Mumbai-bound train.
Rescue workers recovered more bodies in the train wreck caused by Maoists, with fears that the final death toll could exceed 150.
"So far, 110 bodies have been recovered," Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Surajit Kar Purakayastha said.
South Eastern railway officials put the number of injured at 250. Five of the critically injured passengers were taken to Kolkata.
To a question, the IGP said that CID investigation into the derailment of the Lokmanya Tilak Gyaneshwari Super Deluxe Express was continuing.
"Investigations are progressing, but it cannot be shared with the media," he said.
The IGP said the Maoists link in the derailment was clear, but declined to say if more evidence pointing to it has been found.
