A day after a series of massive floods and mudslides hit Leh town and adjoining areas, the magnitude of the natural disaster is still sinking in as rescuers struggle to reach remote areas that have been totally cut off by the deluge. While more than 400 are believed to be missing, acres of “mud fields”, that were till Thursday housing colonies and villages, are still to be dug up, escalating fears that the toll could go up drastically.
Scores of houses in areas adjoining Leh, particularly in Choglamsar, are currently buried under several feet of mud, dimming chances of people being rescued alive. With entire neighbourhoods washed away in the flash floods in the town of 10,000, the local administration is finding it difficult to establish how many are missing and buried under thousands of tonnes of mud.
While the flash floods washed away several buildings, the mudslides that were triggered by the massive inflow of water caused huge casualties. At places, houses are buried under 10-12 feet of mud and workers fear it could take several days to dig them out. The priority of the local administration and military forces that are handling the rescue efforts is to open the road links to Leh so that bulldozers and earth moving machinery can be brought in.
