| The charges against Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa in the alleged land scam have gained momentum with the Opposition flinging documents everyday on how he allegedly denotified land to favour his sons.
In an attempt to silence the Opposition, sources say Yeddyurappa's family now plans to surrender the allotted land.
The Chief Minister has called a Cabinet meeting today to discuss the alleged land scam and also announced a high level inquiry into the charges against him. The Karnataka Cabinet is likely to recommend a judicial probe into the allegations against Yeddyurappa in the land allotment scam.
The inquiry would be conducted either by a retired Supreme Court judge or a sitting judge of the High Court
New documents released by the Opposition in Karnataka show that in 2010, government land was de-notified or de-reserved and sold at heavily-discounted rates for a real estate business owned partly by the chief minister's immediate family members.
In May 2010, on Yeddyurappa's orders, close to 11 acres of land that had been acquired by the government for a public project was made available to a Dubai-based businessman whose company then went on to sell a part of that land to a firm linked to Yeddyurappa's sons, Raghavendra and Vijayendra.
Meanwhile, the Opposition's demands for his resignation on grounds of corruption are getting more aggressive. The campaign is fronted by former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy, whose revelations of property deals involving the chief minister's two sons forced Yeddyurappa to face two votes of confidence last month.
"Certainly he has to resign," said HD Kumaraswamy.
While the Opposition attacks Yeddyurappa over the land allotment scam, the Chief minister is fighting the enemy within - the main opponent and party general secretary Ananth Kumar.
Yeddyurappa has shot off a confidential letter to BJP top leaders seeking action against Ananth Kumar for anti-party activities.
