| The US President’s visit, in his first term in office, was a departure from that of his predecessors to India — both George W Bush and Bill Clinton waited till their second terms. Barack Obama made another exception for Delhi, spending three days here — his longest stay in one country outside America since becoming President. Coming just after his Democratic Party’s defeat in the House polls, Obama kept his visit centred on creating trade and jobs for Americans — two touchy issues back home. While Pakistan and Kashmir did figure in the talks, he was careful in his choice of words. In the end, the US show of support for a UNSC seat for India was much appreciated, although it came with riders on Delhi’s ambivalent stand on the Iran and Myanmar regimes.
China: Handle with care
It was a tough year for New Delhi-Beijing relations. The stapled visa row dominated the discourse and reached the tipping point when China denied stick-on visa to Northern Army Commander Lt Gen B S Jaswal posted in J&K. Tensions also ran high when a New Delhi envoy attended the Nobel ceremony despite Beijing’s demarche to all against doing the same as among the awardees this year was a Chinese dissident. However, while these issues weren't the stumbling blocks as Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao visited towards the end of the year, the trip ended on a sour note when Beijing’s stand on Kashmir prompted New Delhi to keep out the One-China policy mention in the joint statement. On a positive note, a US $100 bn trade target was set. The news that has followed reveals that China has not only officially “shrunk” its border with India (excluding J&K) but is also constructing at least two dozen new projects on the Brahmaputra and its tributaries.
