| Backward Muslims to get share in OBC quota: Khurshid

Union Minister for Minority Affairs Salman Khurshid, on Friday, said in Lucknow that the Centre would soon set aside a certain percentage share of reservation for backward Muslims from overall 27 per cent reservation for Other Backward Castes.
He said it would be “reservation within reservation”, wherein backward Muslims would get specific percentage share of quota from the 27 per cent OBC reservation and it would be applied to all those central services where OBC reservation is applied.
At present, listed backward Muslims get reservation under OBC category but there is no specified percentage. Thus backward minorities have to compete with other backward castes to get this reservation.
When asked about UP, Khurshid said backward Muslims in the state might get around 8 per cent reservation of the OBC quota.
While speaking to media persons in Lucknow, Khurshid said the government was considering different models for this “reservation under reservation” adopted by states like Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, West Bengal and Bihar.
