For a decade, West Bengal had remained unrepresented at the Republic Day parade in Delhi. The break is set to end this year, courtesy Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee.
The Railways’ tableau will have Rabindranath Tagore as part of its theme, with students of the university he set up, Visva Bharati, as the performers. The tableau will be a replica of the railway coach used by Tagore for his travels between Santiniketan and Kolkata; it will travel a stretch of about 3 km.
“When the time came to decide the theme of the railway tableau, Mamata Banerjee could think of nothing other than Tagore as the Railways had inspired Kaviguru to pen many memorable poems that are part of his masterpiece Geetanjali. We have used six such poems on our tableau,” said Chandralekha Mukherjee, executive director (information and publicity, Indian Railways). “The tableau is a tribute by the Ministry of Railways to Kaviguru on his 150th birth anniversary,” she added.
