| Talking tough on the black money issue, the Supreme Court today asked the government to explain what action it has taken in the black money case.
The Supreme Court was hearing a plea against black money being stashed away in foreign banks and asked, "What is that you have done to know once you came to know about the source of money... is it from the arms dealing, drug peddling... these are very serious issues."
The Court was hearing the plea in the backdrop of Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee saying the names of Indian account holders in Germany's LTG bank cannot be revealed.
"We are not talking about unknown names, these names are known to you now, so what have you done with that, we want to know what action is being taken... these people are in the country and amenable to our law. We want to know what action is being taken." The Supreme Court added.
The government is expected to file another affidavit in the case.
In the last hearing the Court had said, "Stashing black money in foreign banks is a theft of national money and plunder of the nation."
Top criminal lawyer and Rajya Sabha MP Ram Jethmalani and other prominent citizens of the country had petitioned the Court on what the government is doing to bring back black money amounting to Rs. 70 lakh crore stashed away in Swiss bank accounts.
The government had submitted the names of the account-holders to the Supreme Court but said these names cannot be made public because it would violate an agreement between India and Germany.
The case is based on a petition filed by former Law Minister Ram Jethmalani and others to retrieve black money being held in foreign banks.
"There is no instant solution to bring back black money. We have got some information from one country. We will use it to collect taxes," said the PM had said.
