2G: ‘Raja paying price for standing by poor’

DMK president M Karunanidhi on Thursday described A Raja as the hapless victim of his efforts to carry the fruits of the telecom revolution to those at the margins of India’s society. Hours earlier, the highest policy-making body of the DMK — meeting as Raja was being produced in court in Delhi — had adopted a resolution saying the arrest proved nothing, and the issue was being blown out of proportion.

In his first public comments since the events of Wednesday, Karunanidhi likened Raja to the mythical Asura king Mahabali who was punished by Vishnu for the sake of the upper castes.

“Raja is a victim of his performance, for making mobile telephony available to the downtrodden,” Karunanidhi told a public meeting here this evening.

A group that has lost power and is no longer able to lord over the lower castes is trying to dethrone Raja, and the media is supporting their false and malicious campaign, the Chief Minister said, without naming anyone. The developments were “disturbing”, but the party ‘movement’ would survive, Karunanidhi said, quoting DMK founder C N Annadurai — “It had a demoralising effect. But I am sure we will see the light of truth very soon.”

Deputy Chief Minister M K Stalin said Raja had always cooperated with the CBI.

Earlier in the day, the DMK general council blamed the opposition for trying to malign the party by attacking the former minister. A report by the CAG was being used to flog the party, the GC noted, even though similar reports submitted during the NDA regime on the same issue had not triggered similar “noise
