The district administration on Tuesday transferred the property title of Gyuto Monastery — the temporary home of the 17th Karmapa, Ogyen Trinley Dorje, since 2002 — in the state government’s name.
The land on which the sprawling monastery stands was declared ‘benami’ by the District Collector a few years ago and the transfer comes as a follow-up action on that, said officials. They refused to link the transfer of property to the recent seizure of foreign currency worth Rs 7.05 crore from the monastery complex.
The process for change of title in the government’s name was done by Tehsildar (Dharamsala) Naresh Kumar in an open assembly at Sidhbari, where the monastery is located. Last week, the tehsildar had sent a communication to the Karmapa’s office, informing it about the process of the property transfer and the date.
“It was a smooth affair and took little over half-an-hour. The Tibetan administration was represented by Randhir Rana, a local advocate, who also did not oppose the transfer process,” Kumar told The Indian Express.
