The CBI’s taking over the probe into the Netai massacre, coming after a severe indictment of the West Bengal CID by the Calcutta High Court, is a huge public embarrassment to Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, but the fallout of the killings goes much beyond that.
What has followed since January 7, when CPM cadres killed nine villagers, has exposed a deep divide within, how the party’s interests have prevailed over the government’s and how, as in Nandigram and Singur, Bhattacharjee failed to gauge the consequences and has paid dearly for it.
The massacre has already been followed by clinching evidence of the presence of “Harmad” (armed CPM) camps in Lalgarh. The court order has now nailed the government’s lie in its desperate bid to project a clean slate about its campaign for Junglemahal.
It is now an open secret that Writers’ Buildings gave in to pressure and tacitly allowed a free hand to local comrades in West Midnapore to shape the CPM’s comeback strategy in Junglemahal
