| In Cong-DMK tremors, Alagiri finds his feet

In the cloud that hung over the Congress-DMK ties for three days, one man emerged from the shadows: the reticent Union minister and intermittent Delhi dweller M K Alagiri.
Over the tug of war between the two parties, the eldest son of DMK patriarch and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi Alagiri made his heft count in national politics for the first time.
So far known only for his inability to communicate in either Hindi or English, his regular absence from Cabinet meetings and Parliament, and his preference for Chennai over Delhi, Alagiri emerged as the rallying point not just for his own party colleagues but also government emissaries trying to break the deadlock. The fact that he overshadowed fellow media-savvy partyman Dayanidhi Maran in the process must have been particularly sweet — the two have had a rocky past.
Having learnt a lesson or two from the events during the process of government formation in 2009, when different leaders in the DMK made competing claims of being the most legitimate party voice in Delhi, Karunanidhi is learnt to have made it amply clear this time that Alagiri was the man to negotiate with.
