More than its 149 new faces, the talking point of the Left Front candidate list in West Bengal is those who have been dumped, a group that includes 91 sitting MLAs, nine of them ministers.
Many reasons have been cited for their exclusion, the primary one being that seats held by some of these leaders have been reserved since last time, or disappeared after delimitation. In a few cases, ailing or elderly leaders have voluntarily opted out.
Overall, however, it runs deeper, party sources confided. They said some have been removed for non-performance, some for involvement in political violence, and some, like Tourism Minister Manab Mukherjee, for allegedly leading a lavish lifestyle apart from facing charges of corruption.
The list also reflects an effort to omit proven losers, though not without exception: it includes Rajdeo Goala despite his loss in 2006. Losers kept out include Sukanta Chattopadhyay who had contested from Singur during the peak of the agitation over the Nano factory. Also dropped were the 2006 candidates from the violence-hit areas of Nandigram, Jhargram, Salboni, Khanakul, Nanoor, Raina, Mangolkot and Ketugram.
