In a rare climbdown, AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa on Friday reached out to sulking allies, who had openly expressed their anguish and had even warned floating a separate front after her party unilaterally announced the seats that it would be contesting in the April 13 Assembly polls.
Taking a leaf out of her rival M Karunanidhi, who has been walking the extra mile to keep allies including the minor ones in good humour, Jaya deputed her election committee members to hold meetings with the junior partners in the alliance — the DMDK, CPM, CPI, MMK, AISMK, AIMMK, RPI and KYF who have been allotted 74 seats in all.
There has been some progress in the talks with MDMK, too, who were thus far extended a meagre single digit offer, and a final decision is expected on Saturday.
AIADMK had, without consultations with its partners, announced it would contest from 160 seats that included sitting seats of allies, leading to protests that threatened to break the alliance. The indication that the principal opposition party was reconsidering its stand came on Thursday when Jaya’s inaugural campaign meet in Madurai was cancelled, a day before it was scheduled. By the time this announcement was made, the Left parties and DMDK had held two rounds of discussions among themselves, leading to speculation on the formation of a third front
