The Congress announced a seat-sharing agreement with the Trinamool Congress for the West Bengal Assembly elections minutes before Mamata Banerjee’s 4 pm deadline ran out Monday, agreeing nearly entirely with the senior partner’s terms, a gesture Banerjee reciprocated by giving the Congress an extra seat to contest.
Congress candidates will now run at 65 seats — Canning East was today’s bonus gain over Banerjee’s offer of 64 last week — and the Trinamool at 227. The Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI) will contest 2 seats.
The Congress will not contest any seat in Kolkata. The Congress made few gains in the Kolkata civic elections last summer; the Trinamool by contrast wrested the corporation on its own.
Mamata also made changes in her list of candidates — the big surprise being the dropping of Mohua Maitra, the former Morgan Stanley executive who joined the Congress and became one of Rahul Gandhi’s aides before switching to the Trinamool.
