In her first rally in Bengal for the Assembly elections, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi on Friday launched a scathing attack on the Left, saying that it has ruined the state in its 34 years of rule.
“The Marxists have made a mockery of the word communism. Does this word mean making people poorer day by day. West Bengal has become one of the most backward states of India as in every sphere, be it health, education or agriculture, or tea gardens, the state has lagged behind other states miserably,” Sonia said at a rally at Raajbari Sports Complex Ground here. “The dream that the Marxist leaders showed to the people has vanished into thin air.”
Sonia was accompanied by senior leaders, including Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjeee and the party’s Bengal chief Manas Ranjan Bhuina.
She also accused the state government of inefficiency in spending the money allotted by the Centre. “The UPA government allotted a lot of money for the state. I want you to ask the leaders of the Left , ‘where has all the money gone?’ Had that money been utilised properly, the picture of West Bengal would have been totally different,’’ she said, amid applause by party supporters who thronged the ground.
