West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who began functioning from her own chamber at the state secretariat, today paid Rs two lakh to the government from her own funds towards its renovation.
"I have had the room done up in keeping with my taste. I am told that the cost incurred is Rupees two lakh. I have handed over a cheque for the amount to the Chief Secretary," Banerjee told newsmen.
According to Secretariat officials, the money was paid from the proceeds of the sale of Banerjee's paintings.
Since taking oath on May 20, Banerjee has been functioning from the ante chamber of her office and the Chief Minister's conference room.
Banerjee said some departments would be expanded in keeping with their importance and located outside the state Secretariat. At present, departments like Health, Education and IT are located outside the heritage Writers' Buildings
