Last Lokpal meeting today
Last Lokpal meeting today: Inclusion of PM the sticking point
 INDIA , 21-June-2011  8:13:27 AM
The members of the Lokpal Bill drafting committee - which combines five ministers and five non-elected representatives headed by Mr Anna Hazare - will meet for the last time today, as a last resort to arrive at some kind of consensus. They will also exchange their respective drafts on the proposed bill today.

This comes a day after both sides met to discuss the issue and find a way to end the impasse. But Monday's crucial meeting seemed like a case of one step forward, two steps back. And that one step forward was a baby step

Both sides described yesterday's meeting as cordial but the list of disagreements remain - including the inclusion of Prime Minister in the ambit of the Lokpal being the foremost.

Key members of the Lokpal drafting panel, Anna Hazare and Arvind Kejriwal, spoke to NDTV yesterday about the key sticking points between the two sides.

"One of the important issues was bringing the Prime Minister within the ambit of the Lokpal. The government said no initially. They have agreed more or less on this today, but they will speculate about it later. On the issue of bringing the judiciary into the Lokpal, they seemed to agree, but will think about it later," said Mr Hazare.

"You are trying to give immunity to the PM, which he does not enjoy in the Constitution; the Constitution grants immunity only to the President of India. In the last 62 years, Prime Minister was covered in the corruption act, why do you want to take him out now? I don't think neither they nor us are hoping for an agreement tomorrow," said Mr Kejriwal.

The government side, however, reiterated their stand. "As far as the issue of inclusion of the Prime Minister is concerned, there is an acceptable proposal that PM after demitting office could certainly come under the purview of Lokpal," said Mr Salman Khursheed, member of the Lokpal drafting panel.
