| Members of the students' wing of the CPM today clashed with police during protests over the UDF government's educational policies in Thiruvananthapuram.
The protest turned violent after activists of the Students Federation of India (SFI) marched into the state secretariat, pelting stones at the police who in turn lathicharged them.
After the lathicharge, students retreated into the University College. Police entered the campus and lobbed tear gas shells to disperse the students.
The situation has been brought under control.
