The Congress has authorised Rahul Gandhi to hold negotiations with prospective allies in next year’s Assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh. While general secretary in charge of UP Digvijaya Singh has been in touch with RLD’s Ajit Singh, the Amethi MP has been kept abreast of the talks and will take a final call on key issues when negotiations reach an advanced stage.
While Ajit was inclined to negotiate the merger of the RLD with the Congress earlier, he is said to have given up the idea and would rather have a seat-sharing arrangement. His son Jayant is said to be opposed to the merger. During talks on merger early this year, Ajit was learnt to have demanded a Cabinet berth at the Centre as also a commitment from the Congress to create Harit Pradesh state, among others. Talks, however, failed as the Congress insisted on “merger first” before conceding his demands.
