Disgraced former Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich approached a court on Wednesday seeking to overturn his convictions on 17 counts of fraud, bribery and extortion, including selling the senate seat of then president-elect Barack Obama.
Defense attorneys are hoping to show that the court should have thrown out jurors who were biased against Blagojevich, but instead ended up on the jury, said a defense lawyer familiar with the case.
Blagojevich was convicted on 17 out of the 20 counts on June 27 by a 12-member jury in Chicago.
According to Chicago Sun-Times, the motion filed by Blagojevich's attorneys asks US District Judge James Zagel to hold onto jury questionnaires from the beginning of the trial as a July 25 appeal deadline looms.
Two Indian American businessmen Raghuveer Nayak, a longtime friend of the Jackson family, and his friend Rajinder Bedi, a Blagojevich aide, had allegedly tried to sell the empty seat of then president-elect Obama to Senator Jesse Jackson Jr, in exchange for a USD 1 million fundraiser
