Indicating that the ministry will not hesitate to crack down on dubious deals, Defence Minister A K Antony on Tuesday said “extreme steps” will be taken if corruption is detected even in the last stage of an acquisition process.
This comes even as senior officials in his ministry have been directed to look into allegations of discrepancies in the procurement process of the $1-billion deal for new basic trainers for the IAF.
Speaking at a seminar on defence acquisitions in Delhi, Antony said all vendors will get a level-playing field but warned companies against any efforts to corrupt personnel involved in the acquisition process. The resolve to take “extreme steps” even in the last stage of acquisition process comes as an ongoing deal to purchase new trainer aircraft has come under fire.
As first reported by The Indian Express, the deal for 75 trainer aircraft has come under the scanner after a representation from South Korea to investigate concerns about the selection process and the validity of commercial documents submitted by a Swiss firm, Pilatus, that was declared as the lowest bidder. The allegations included a charge that incomplete commercial bids were submitted by the Swiss firm and certain charges like transfer of technology costs were not factored in.
