Stepping up his offensive against P Chidambaram, senior BJP leader Yashwant Sinha has requested Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) chairman P C Chacko to summon the Home Minister as a witness in connection with the 2G spectrum allocation scam.
Sinha, who had earlier publicly demanded a CBI probe into the alleged role of Chidambaram in the matter, has made the latest request to Chacko through a letter on Wednesday. Chacko has been, in fact, saddled with requests from several members to summon all former finance ministers.
Sinha, who is a member of the JPC, had offered to depose before the parliamentary panel during the initial sittings. A few members have requested Chacko to send for RBI Governor and former finance secretary D Subba Rao as a witness. He had appeared before the PAC too.
Chacko was non-committal when asked about his response to Sinha’s request. He said he was in the process of compiling all such requests. “The committee will take a decision through a consensus on who is to be called,” he said. The panel, which is currently examining former telecom secretaries, has plans to summon all former telecom ministers. Though the portfolio has been held by some prime ministers too, there has been no demand from any quarter to call them.
