| Nalini meets husband Murugan at Vellore jail

| Nalini Sriharan, who has spent 20 years in prison for her role in the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, met her husband Murugan at the Vellore jail today. Nalini was shifted from Chennai to Vellore a few days ago.
This is Nalini's first meeting with Murugan after President rejected his mercy plea last month. Nalini had not met her husband over the last one year.
Murugan and Nalini were sentenced to death by the Supreme Court, along with two other people, in 1999. Nalini's sentence was commuted after an intervention by Mr Gandhi's wife, Sonia, who is the president of the Congress party. Mrs Gandhi stepped in after Nalini delivered a baby girl in jail.
Murugan and the other two convicts - Santhan and Perarivalan - were scheduled to be hanged on September 9. But last week, the Madras High Court suspended their execution by eight weeks.
Their mercy petitions, filed 11 years ago asking for their sentence to be commuted to life in prison, were rejected by President Pratibha Patil last month.
