| The Prime Minister will decide whether preparations at a new nuclear plant in Tamil Nadu should be put on hold because of protests by villagers in Koodanakulam. Over 8000 gather to shout slogans at the plant's gates, another 100 are on the tenth day of their hunger strike.
V Narayanaswamy, a senior minister who was deputed by Dr Manmohan Singh to gauge local mood, has completed his visit and has also met with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.
Earlier this week, she wrote to the PM and asked him to temporarily stop work at the plant till villagers are reassured of its safety. The government of India has certified that the plant meets international safety standards. It is designed to withstand a tsunami, for example. Yet, local opposition to the plant has been growing. One of the two nuclear reactors was to become operational next month. Experts believe the plant will greatly reduce Tamil Nadu's considerable power problems.
After protesters at the plant expressed their anger yesterday, Mr Narayanaswamy promised them, "People's safety first. Power later." Mr Narayanaswamy will brief the PM on the crisis when he returns to Delhi.
