| The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly was adjourned indefinitely for a second day in a row today after the Opposition refused to let the House function. There were stormy scenes over the alleged custodial death of National Conference party worker, Syed Mohammed Yousuf Shah as the Peoples Democratic Party-led Opposition demanding a discussion in the House over Mr Shah's death.
The National Conference member died while in police custody early on Friday morning. An initial post-mortem report, read out by J&K Home Secretary B R Sharma on Monday, said Mr Shah died of a cardio-respiratory arrest or heart attack. It said there were no visible external injuries.
Mr Shah was allegedly involved in large scale corruption and fixing political deals. On Thursday, there was a confrontation between him, Mr Abdullah and other National Conference leaders at the Chief Minister's house where he was accused of taking Rs. 1 crore from two party leaders and promising them a ministerial berth and a seat in the Legislative Council. He was handed over to the Crime Branch by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
The Opposition wants Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to resign. They say a probe that is meant to investigate his role cannot be fair if he stays on as Chief Minister. It is also insisting on a discussion in the state Assembly.
"Why can't we discuss a subject in the Assembly which is discussed by the ruling party everywhere? The ruling party could have put forward their viewpoint, we could have put forwards ours. Whatever we are saying is not our allegation, it is based on the circumstantial evidence," PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti said.
Even the 2G case is with the Supreme Court, but it is still being discussed in Parliament, she added.
The National Conference government rejected demands of the Chief Minister's resignation. The government has offered a judicial inquiry. Yesterday, addressing a press conference, Mr Abdullah said that allegations against him were "beneath contempt.
