| Colonel Moammar Gaddafi has reportedly been captured in the coastal town of Sirte, where he has reportedly been hiding. Libyan media and Al Jazeera said that Mr Gaddafi was killed in his home town. But these reports have not been confirmed.
"He has been captured. He is badly wounded, but he is still breathing," Mohamed Leith told AFP, adding that he had seen Mr Gaddafi himself and that he was wearing a kaki uniform and a turban. Libyan TV channel "Libya lil Ahrar" also said that he was in custody.
In Sirte, medics said the defence minister in Colonel Gaddafi's ousted regime, Abu Bakr Yunis, had been killed in the final battle for the town. His body was identified at the field hospital where it was brought in a pick-up truck on Thursday, Dr Abdu Rauf told AFP.
There are also conflicting versions of how Mr Gaddafi was captured. Some say that he was shot dead in a bunker where he was hiding. Others say that he was captured while trying to escape in a convoy.
Sirte, Colonel Gaddafi's hometown, fell earlier today after weeks of heavy fighting. The Libyan leader's capture ends months of conflict in his country.
The New York Times reports, "As rumor of his capture spread in the capital, Tripoli, many celebrated in the streets. There was no immediate comment on the city's capture from Mustapha Abdul Jalil, the interim government's top official. If confirmed, the fall of Surt would allow Mr. Abdul Jalil to declare the country liberated and in control of its borders, and to start a process that would lead to a general election for a national council within eight months."
