| A First Information Report has been registered against External Affairs Minister S M Krishna and two other former Karnataka chief ministers by the Lokayukta Police today on a private complaint alleging that they facilitated illegal mining during their tenures.
Apart from Mr Krishna, his senior Congress colleague N Dharam Singh and JD(S) state unit President H D Kumaraswamy, both of whom succeeded him as chief ministers, have been named in the FIR, Lokayukta ADGP Satyanarayana Rao told PTI.
Eleven bureaucrats have also been named in the FIR filed under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, Forest Conservation Act, Forest Act and Minerals and Metals Regulation and Development Act (MMRDA) and under sections of the Indian Penal Code.
Admitting the private complaint filed by a social activist and businessman, T J Abraham, on December 3, Lokayukta court judge N K Sudhindra Rao had directed the police to investigate it and then submit a report on or before January 6.
The complainant has alleged that Mr Krishna, who was the Chief Minister from October 1999 to May 2004, and Mr Dharam Singh and Mr Kumaraswamy permitted illegal mining for pecuniary gains.
Mr Abraham, a city-based social activist and a businessman, had submitted that his complaint was based on the report on illegal mining presented to the government by former Lokayukta Santosh Hegde in August.
Mr Krishna though had, in a statement issued last week, countered the charge saying that the detailed Lokayukta report on illegal mining hadn't indicted him. He also said that de-reservation of forests for mining was "not done secretly", alleging further that the charges were an "attempt at character assassination".
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), meanwhile, has called for Mr Krishna's resignation. "SM Krishna should resign from his post...BJP is waiting for Congress' decision on Krishna, now it's upto them", said party spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain.
