| Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi was greeted by protesters holding black flags as he arrived in Aligarh today. The protesters, reportedly Samajwadi Party workers, also attempted to block the leader's cavalcade.
Rahul Gandhi is on a five-day tour of poll-bound Uttar Pradesh. At various stop-overs during his trip, he has been targeting state Chief Minister and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) head Mayawati and also Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh.
Aligarh, significantly, has always been a Samajwadi Party's stronghold. And that perhaps explains the protests.
"Around 50 to 60 members of SP attempted to block cavalcade of Rahul Gandhi while he was proceeding towards Badaun after landing at Dhanipur airport," Senior Superintendent of Police Satyendra Veer Singh said.
He added that around 15 SP activists were detained as they tried to breach the leader's security cordon.
