| Is Salman Rushdie attending the literary fest in Jaipur this week? Amid security concerns, the organisers have denied media reports that the noted author will not attend the event this weekend, but have refused to divulge details of his visit, only saying for now that he will not be in India on Friday, January 20, the day the popular festival begins.
Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot met the Union Home Minister in Delhi today to discuss the issue, among others, and admitted that Mr Rushdie's presence will have security implications. Mr Gehlot said, "Salman Rushdie's presence does have security implications and we are keeping a close watch and have been in touch with the organizers. But at the same time we can't prevent him from coming since he is a PIO (Person of Indian Origin).
The Rajasthan government fears protests in Jaipur over the controversial author's visit. The security concerns have arisen after Islamic seminary, Darul-uloom Deoband, said earlier this month that the Man Booker prize winner should not be allowed in India. The author had tweeted then that he didn't need a visa to come to India because he has a Person of Indian Origin card.
The organisers of the festival say they "stand by the invitation to Mr Rushdie."
