Fisherman's family seeks Rs. 1 cror
Italy ship row: Fisherman's family seeks Rs. 1 crore compensation
 INDIA , 22-February-2012  3:0:16 AM
The family of one of the two Indian fishermen, who were shot dead by two Italian marines off the Kerala coast last week, has filed a case against the Italian shipping company in the Kerala High Court and has sought a compensation of Rs. one crore. It says the ship should not be allowed to leave Kerala till the company compensates them.

The two Italian soldiers, Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone, were guarding the Italian merchant vessel Enrica Lexie. They allegedly mistook the fishermen for Somalian pirates. They were arrested on Sunday and have been charged with murder.

India and Italy are now engaged in serious diplomatic crossfire over the arrests. Amid escalating tension, Italy's deputy Foreign Minister will arrive in Delhi today and hold meetings with officials of the External Affairs Ministry. Italy's Foreign Minister is also expected to visit India next week.

Junior Foreign Minister Staffan De Mistura will "continue on a political level the action so far carried out by a delegation of experts from the Italian foreign, defence and justice ministries," Italy's Foreign Ministry said in a note.

Italy says that the Indian police took "coercive" and "unilateral" action when it escorted the two soldiers off the oil tanker on Sunday and arrested them. It will today move the Kerala High Court seeking quashing of the FIR against the marines.

Yesterday, a magistrate in Kerala issued a search warrant that empowers the police to search the ship and seize the murder weapons.

The tanker was sailing from Singapore to Egypt when the incident took place. Italian authorities insist that the men should not be prosecuted in India as the tanker was flying under an Italian flag in international waters when the shooting occurred on Wednesday last off the coast of Kerala.

Italy's Defence Ministry has claimed the Indian fishing boat behaved aggressively and was repeatedly warned before the shots were fired. It said the officers fired warning shots
