| Stirring up another controversy, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has said that there is no medical evidence that a woman was raped in Burdwan's Katwa on Saturday and that the incident has been concocted by the CPM.
A group of criminals looted passengers of a train near Katwa in Burdwan district on Saturday evening. The alleged victim, a widow, told the police that when she tried to object, she was dragged out of the train and raped by them on the railway tracks.
Last evening, Ms Banerjee said the medical exam did not reveal any evidence of rape and claimed that the incident had been concocted by the CPM.
The incident at Katwa is the third instance of rape reported in the state in recent days. On the night of February 5, a girl was raped outside a pub in Kolkata's famous Park Street. A man who befriended her at the pub offered her a ride home in his Honda City. When she climbed in, there were two men in the car. But soon, another three entered the vehicle. She was raped at gunpoint.
But the incident soon snowballed into a huge political controversy following Ms Banerjee's remarks dismissing the incident as an attempt to malign her government. This immediately sparked criticism from the Opposition which slammed Ms Banerjee for being "insensitive".
On Friday, a middle-aged woman died after she was raped allegedly by a truck driver and his helper in the Baranagar area under North 24-Parganas district.
