| A day after creating a furore of sorts by his remarks on mid-term polls, Trinamool Congress leader and Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi has taken a U-turn. Mr Trivedi today told NDTV that he made the remark in his individual capacity.
"My remarks have nothing to do with my party, it has nothing to do with me as a minister. It is just an exchange of idea as a student of politics, analysing a political situation in the country. And as an individual, I have certainly lost my freedom of expression but it is not a statement," he said.
"Elections are expensive and no mid-term polls are good for the people or the country. You cannot think of a better Prime Minister than Dr Manmohan Singh. The whole world is going through an economic crisis and it is Dr Manmohan Singh who has the economic acumen," Mr Trivedi added.
The Railway Minister also said that her party chief Mamata Banerjee will never try to rock the boat.
Speaking at the Indian Express' Idea Exchange Summit yesterday, Mr Trivedi had said if that there is an anti-Congress wave in the country and the Samajwadi Party and the BJP wants early polls then Congress should understand.
"Trinamool may also be happy to have a mid-term poll now rather than two years later. If I am in a situation of a lame duck then I think it may be a good idea to call it a day," Mr Trivedi had said.
He also said that not much could be expected in the Budget Session of Parliament.
His comments had added to the mid-term poll clamour with the BJP hitting out at the Congress by saying its lukewarm performance in Uttar Pradesh and the clear mandate for the Samajwadi Party could reshape the alliance at the Centre. BJP leader Sushma Swaraj had told NDTV that the seat count shows that a weakened Congress is incapable of serving any longer as the pivot for the UPA coalition.
Ms Swaraj had said a seat count shows a weakened Congress is incapable of serving any longer as the pivot for the UPA coalition at the Centre.
