| Pakistan president Asif Ali Zardari is likely to visit Ajmer next week, sources have told NDTV. The president has, according to top government officials, also asked if he can bring along 12 members of his family.
Confirming the proposed plan, Farhatullah Babar, the Presidential spokesperson said, "President Zardari had expressed a desire to visit Ajmer a long time ago." But the date has not been finalised yet, he said. "Will check if it has been proposed by Indian government for April 8 as reported in Indian media," Mr Babar added.
The visit, being dubbed as a purely private one, is intended as a pilgrimage to the dargah (shrine) of the famous Sufi saint Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti in the city. Sources say the itinerary will, in all likelihood, be a one-day affair with Mr Zardari arriving in the morning and flying out on the same day.
Sources have also told NDTV that Indian officials are trying to see if a meeting between President Zardari and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh can be worked out during the former's visit. With ties between the two nations having steadily improved in the last few months, New Delhi, sources say, is keen to take forward the positive momentum. Dr Singh had recently met his Pakistani counterpart Yousuf Raza Gilani on the sidelines of the Nuclear Security Summit in Seoul.
