India's trafficking hub?
West Bengal: India's trafficking hub?
 INDIA , 4-April-2012  3:20:5 AM
In a shocking revelation presented to Parliament last month, almost 14000 adults and children have been reported missing from West Bengal in 2011-2012 - the highest in the country.

Majority of these missing persons are believed to have been trafficked outside the state for sex trade or employed as domestic help by fake placement agencies.

Places like Sandeshkhali, an island in the Sunderbans, are the traffickers' favourite hunting ground otherwise called 'source area'. Almost every household here has a report of a missing girl child.

"They took her for a year but durga puja came, kali puja came, year after year passed but she never returned," said a woman who is waiting for her 16-year-old daughter to return. She was taken away six years ago with promise of a job.

The trafficking kingpin of Sandeshkhali area is Hari. The 16-year-old girl was also sold by Hari. His family admitted to NDTV that he has been involved in the trafficking of women and children, but Hari continues his trade with impunity.

Only a lucky few have managed to escape from his clutches. Despite agencies like Childline working in these areas, combating trafficking requires state support which is not available.

"We receive threats from traffickers but identifying the victims is a huge task," Sanjib Mistry Team Leader, Childline.

In recent times, the destination for the trafficked victims has been the brothels of Pune's Farashkhana area .They also find their way to Delhi and Mumbai.

Though the Ministry of Home Affairs had directed state governments to set up anti-human trafficking units in every district, West Bengal is yet to implement it. Only four of the 19 districts have such units. With West Bengal clearly a major hub of trafficking the measures seem too inadequate to contain this violence.
