| Just when it seemed that its troubles are over, there is fresh crisis for the BJP. On Day 2 of the national executive meeting today, where the party was planning to present a united face, sources say BJP patriarch LK Advani is likely to skip a key rally. Mr Advani has reportedly cited as prior engagements as the reason for not attending the rally.
Mr Advani has been a part of the BJP's political strategy for last 60 years and never skipped a meeting so his absence is bound to raise questions, especially at a time when the party is planning and preparing for the Assembly elections in Gujarat later this year and general elections in 2014. But the party is trying to play down his absence.
Apart from Mr Advani, there are also reports that Karnataka strongman BS Yeddyurappa, who reached Mumbai today to attend the conclave, will also reportedly give the rally a miss. Mr Advani was supposed to end the BJP meet with a message for unity and preparedness
With this rally at the end of the two-day national executive meeting, the BJP was trying to put up a united face asking all the chief ministers of the BJP-ruled states to join in.
After Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi upstaged all else on Day 1 of the BJP's national executive meet, Day 2 saw the strategic arrival of former Karnataka chief minister BS Yeddyurappa. The BJP strongman, who has been in a deep sulk with his party leadership for "sidelining" him, landed in Mumbai this morning with a promise that he "will not demand any post" for himself. Today, the party will get down to more sedate strategy making today. It will adopt a political resolution which will underline the importance of mass based leaders. The BJP will also try to reduce friction between regional and national leaders.
Yesterday, Mr Modi had arrived in Mumbai half-way into the first day of the BJP meeting after his old rival Sanjay Joshi resigned to ensure that the Gujarat CM would attend the executive.
