| Pranab Mukherjee for President? Not yet, says Congress. Options still being weighed

| After an extended meeting with the Prime Minister this afternoon, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee shared the latest inflation figures with reporters. "Who will be the presidential candidate, we will come to know shortly," he said.
The Congress has indicated so far that Mr Mukherjee remains one of the options it is considering. It was far less ambiguous about the Prime Minister's status. Party spokesperson Janardhan Dwivedi declared this morning that there is no question of the Prime Minister moving out of his office - a suggestion made by allies Mamata Banerjee and Mulayam Singh Yadav made last evening, creating a perfect storm. "We cannot spare Dr Manmohan Singh," said the party spokesperson Janardhan Dwivedi, who also asserted that Dr Singh will stay in office till the next general election, currently scheduled for 2014.
The statement by the Congress in defense of the Prime Minister came an inexplicable 16 hours after Ms Banerjee and Mr Yadav combined their firepower.
