| The BJP-led NDA will meet tomorrow to discuss the Presidential elections and decide on its strategy.
In Chennai today, BJP leader LK Advani met Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa and, he said, discussed all possible names including that of NCP leader PA Sangma, who threw his hat into the ring some time ago and APJ Abdul Kalam, whose name was suggested by Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee and the Samajwadi Party's Mulayam Singh Yadav yesterday.
In the googly fest that Mamata-Mulayam bowled last evening, the doosra was resurrecting the name of Dr Kalam for a second stint as President of India. They were clearly counting on support from the opposition National Democratic Alliance (NDA). That support might not be available off the shelf: The BJP is inclined, but will wait and watch; the JD(U) is unsure whether this will set the right precedent.
Sources in the BJP, which leads the NDA, say the party's core group believes Dr Kalam would be a most suitable candidate, but the party will continue to play its cards close to its chest as it waits for the ruling Congress to announce its nominee. Dr Kalam's name had first been suggested some months ago by the BJP's Sushma Swaraj.
The BJP core group met yesterday a little after Ms Banerjee and Mr Yadav threw the race for Rashtrapati Bhawan wide open last evening by suggesting three names - Dr Kalam, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and former Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee. The BJP leaders reportedly discussed all the names and sources said the party would take its views to its allies in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and then firm up strategy. Three important leaders - LK Advani, Arun Jaitley and Sushma Swaraj - were not present at yesterday's core group meeting.
Sources in the JD(U), another major partner in the NDA, say the party is less sanguine about the former President's candidacy just yet as it is not sure whether such a second stint will be a healthy precedent.
