| Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has told NDTV that his party has not decided yet whether it will support a second consecutive term for vice-president Hamid Ansari. The election for vice-president will be held in August.
The Congress is working on building consensus around Mr Ansari among its allies in the coalition it leads, the UPA. A meeting on Saturday in Delhi has been called to discuss the vice-presidential candidate of the coalition. The Prime Minister has phoned estranged ally and UPA member Mamata Banerjee, to ensure she will send a representative to the meeting. She has agreed that Mukul Roy, cabinet minister from her party, will be present.
Mr Kumar, sources say, is keen on backing Mr Ansari, with who he shares a close relationship. He said today that he will wait for a meeting of his allies in the opposition coalition, the NDA , to decide his party's stand. Mr Kumar and the BJP, which leads the coalition, are backing different candidates for President. His party will vote for Pranab Mukherjee, the UPA's candidate, while the BJP has endorsed former speaker PA Sangma. Mr Kumar's insistence that his mind is not made up on the Ansari issue is seen as a diplomatic attempt to prove to the BJP that he is not bent upon causing more awkwardness and is open to dialogue. The delay in announcing his stand could also help him pressure the UPA to grant a large financial package for Bihar which he has been campaigning for aggressively.
