| Gopal Goyal Kanda, the former Haryana minister who is accused of abetting the suicide of 23-year-old former air hostess Geetika Sharma, has been arrested by the Delhi Police, but only after a night of much drama.
Mr Kanda is likely to be produced in a trial court in Rohini later today, where the Delhi Police is expected to seek his custody for questioning.
Geetika Sharma, who had worked in several of Mr Kanda's companies in the last six years, had named Mr Kanda her suicide note. She was found dead at her Delhi home on August 5 and Mr Kanda was asked to join the investigation in the case on August 8. However, he had been on the run for 11 days. Geetika's brother Ankit Sharma alleges that this delay would have given him enough time to destroy evidence against him.
"I hope the investigation is impartial. He had sufficient time to destroy evidence against him. His statement should be recorded on camera," he said.
A little after midnight on Friday, Gopal Goyal Kanda's brother Govind Kanda announced that the former Haryana minister would surrender "in 10 minutes" at the Ashok Vihar police station. But the 10-minute wait turned into a four-hour-long drama - Mr Kanda, who was expected to surrender around 12:30 am according to his brother, tried doing so only a little after 4 am
