CAG report on coal: Mulayam's party
CAG report on coal: Mulayam's party, Left, TDP hold dharna outside Parliament
 INDIA , 31-August-2012  3:42:12 AM
The Congress-led UPA government will not thank God it's Friday. Today, the BJP, which has stalled Parliament for days now over the coal block allocation issue, will protest in 40 cities. And just outside Parliament this morning, Mulayam Singh Yadav sat on a dharna along with the Left and the Telugu Desam Party against the disruption of Parliament and to demand an investigation supervised by a Supreme Court judge into what is being called 'Coal-gate'.

"We demand that a special investigative team should sit on this. If investigation is not done then we will not keep quiet. We will struggle in the future," said Mr Yadav, who is seen as a friend of the UPA and one who has bailed it out of tight spots on several occasions. But this time, he has added to its headache with his latest alignment of non-BJP, non-Congress parties. Flanked by his MPs, including Jaya Bachchan, he raised slogans against the government. As is wont to happen, whispers of a third front evolving have got louder again, though both the ruling Congress and the main opposition NDA are dismissive about it.

Apart from an investigation, the SP, Left and TDP want that the Houses be allowed to function and a debate be held on the controversial allocation of coal blocks that the government's auditor says has caused a loss of Rs. 1.86 lakh crore to the national exchequer. For the eighth day today, Parliament was adjourned early.

The BJP says it is not happy at having to disrupt Parliament, admits it cannot do so "as a policy" on every issue, but stoutly justifies its actions on the coal block allocation issue. Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley told NDTV, "If by sacrificing one session of Parliament the telecom set up can be cleaned up, it is a small price to pay."

Mr Jaitley contended that, "We have shaken the conscience of the nation...A Raja (former Telecom Minister and main accused in the 2G scam) was arrested because we stalled House."
