| A new petition challenging the nuclear plant at Kudankulam in Tamil Nadu has been filed in the Supreme Court today. In the areas surrounding the atomic power project, thousands of villagers are on a hunger strike to demand that the atomic power project be shut down immediately.
The nuclear plant is meant to swing into business soon- fuel will be poured into the first of two nuclear reactors, enabling it to generate power. This was cleared by the Madras High Court last week. But the case in the Supreme Court, to be argued by lawyer-activist Prashant Bhushan, alleges that enough attention has not been paid to safety features at the Indo-Russian joint venture.
Mr Bhushan has asked for an urgent hearing tomorrow. His case alleges that the government has absolved the Russian company that is supplying the nuclear reactor from any liability in case of an accident. The petition states that "the Government has also brutally cracked down on the local community peacefully protesting against the plant and has slapped sedition cases against thousands of protestors. Thus it is absolutely clear that the Government intends to push the project through without any consideration of safety, costs, environmental impact and other concerns regarding the project."
