After Mayawati's outburst, PM,
After Mayawati's outburst, PM, others speak up for Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari
 INDIA , 13-December-2012  2:48:20 AM
The Rajya Sabha came together today to express its support for Chairman Hamid Ansari, who was subjected yesterday to a scathing and unprecedented attack by Uttar Pradesh politician Mayawati.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who is also the Leader of the Upper House said, "Chairman sir, I rise to convey to you that our government has the fullest and highest regard for you. Respect for the chair is respect for maintaining the dignity of the house."

"We will ensure that the chair is given all cooperation in running the house," he added.

Mayawati who was unrepentant yesterday, after accusing Mr Ansari of dereliction of duty, was contrite today. "I respect the chair and appeal to all to rise over party politics to discuss and pass the bill for quota in promotions," Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief said.

The Rajya Sabha has been paralysed this week largely over the issue of a discussion on whether promotions in government jobs should be reserved for Dalits and tribals.

Assuring the chair of his cooperation, Leader of the Opposition Arun Jaitley said, "What we are seeing today is really the strength of the House. I wish to assure you that the House will speak in one voice."

Frequent disruptions by parliamentarians from different parties have been forcing daily adjournments of both Houses.

The first few days of this Winter Session of Parliament were squandered till the government agreed to a vote on its decision to allow foreign supermarkets into the country. A new deadlock is the result of opposing views on a bill that seeks quotas for Dalits and tribals for promotions in government jobs.

While Mayawati's party, the BSP, wants this to be enacted urgently as a law, her political rival, Mulayam Singh Yadav, is determined that the bill should not be taken up for debate
