| Norway custody row: Calcutta High Court hears case today

| The Calcutta High Court is expected to decide today if custody of the two siblings brought from Norway after a legal and diplomatic battle last year can be given to their mother or whether they should continue to stay with their uncle.
The mother, Sagarika Bhattacharya, has appeared in court with the children, Abhigyan and Aishwarya.
The Child Welfare Commission (CWC) and West Bengal police had handed over the children to Mrs Bhattacharya, inviting a lashing by the high court yesterday. The court said the children should remain with their uncle, Arunabhash Bhattacharya, as ordered by a Norway court last year.
Last year, Abhigyan and Aishwarya, aged three and one, were taken under emergency foster care by Norwegian authorities on grounds that they were neglected by their parents while living in Norway.
The Indian government intervened after a public furore. A Norway court ordered that the children be kept with their uncle, after which they were brought to his home in West Bengal's Burdwan district.
Mrs Bhattacharya moved the CWC, which gave her custody of the children in November last year. The CWC said the interests of the children would be best served by staying with their mother.
