| Security being misused by VVIPs as symbol of power: Supreme Court

| The Supreme Court today came down heavily on the union government and states for the elaborate security provided to VVIPs at the cost of ordinary citizens and sought to know in four weeks how much money is being spent to guard politicians and public figures.
"Security has become a symbol of power and it's misused, running riot on ordinary citizens," the top court said.
The court directed the union government and the states to declare how many public personalities, including their families, enjoyed VVIP security. It also wanted to know the rules under which traffic restrictions are put for others when VVIPs travel.
The court said high positions should not entitle people to VVIP security and a high-powered committee should assess if they faced a threat.
Last month, the Supreme Court had observed that VVIP security was a hassle for ordinary citizens and should be limited to a chosen few.
"Security can be given to PM, President, Vice President, Speaker, Chief Justice of India and similar counterparts in the states. But what is seen is that the red beacon is provided to all and sundry," the court said, mentioning the death of five people in Hyderabad because of traffic restrictions for VVIPs.
The court had also criticised Delhi Police's Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mangesh Kashyap, for filing an affidavit that security to people holding higher posts is necessary to enable them to take "bold and impartial decisions".
