| The Congress in Mumbai made sure the city knew Rahul Gandhi was dropping in - posters of the new Vice-President of the party were on unfettered display. But on Twitter, Mr Gandhi's welcome was chilly because his VIP convoy blocked traffic during morning rush hour.
One tweet from Vidyut þ@Vidyut said, "Diyar Rahul Gandhi & Congress, your wisdom is infinite, but blocking roads in a always hurried Mumbai doesn't win voters & influence people." Another, from बोलो þ@aurbolo , warned, "If you see traffic being halted in Mumbai today, chances are Rahul Gandhi convoy is getting a preference over you. Enjoy the heat."
The police says Mr Gandhi was rushed from the airport to the Congress office in central Mumbai using the sea-link and that traffic was blocked for about eight minutes, standard for VVIPs.
Mr Gandhi will spend the day assessing his party's Mumbai franchise, which is deeply fissured.
For nearly 15 years, the Congress has been in power in Maharashtra with its partner, Sharad Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party (NCP); lately, the alliance has squeaking publicly, showing signs of wear and tear. The state will choose its next government along with the national elections next year.
The party needs to focus on how to combat anti-incumbency, at a time when some of its senior leaders in Maharashtra have been tainted by charges of corruption. Ashok Chavan had to resign as chief minister over allegations that he was involved in a scam that saw apartments in a high-rise means for war widows and veterans being divided illicitly among bureaucrats and politicians
The Congress' infirmities were exposed in last year's elections for the municipal corporation of Mumbai, a powerful body which handles an annual budget of over 20,000 crores.
The Congress performed poorly. Mumbai president Kripashankar Singh was blamed for promoting factionalism. He resigned later after charges of corruption.
