| BJP rejects Nitish Kumar's criticism, says target UPA, not Narendra Modi

| The BJP is not inclined to abandon Narendra Modi at the behest of important ally Nitish Kumar, and has sharply advised him to attack the Congress instead, amid speculation that the two partners could split.
Nitish Kumar, who is the Chief Minister of Bihar, yesterday listed for the BJP his criteria for the kind of prime ministerial candidate his party will back for the 2014 national elections. That list ruled Mr Modi out.
The BJP has said that the NDA's effort must be directed at removing the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre, not at undermining its own leaders. BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman said after Mr Kumar's speech in Delhi, "We reject all unfounded inferences against Narendra Modi...The BJP expects the opposition parties and allies to focus on this. It is unfortunate if they (allies) concentrate their energies on our chief ministers and dilute the focus on removing the UPA."
BJP president Rajnath Singh, who has begun an exercise to assess his party's election-preparedness, will take stock of the situation in Bihar later this week.
Mr Kumar took no names yesterday, but there was no ambiguity in his message. "Only one who can carry with him all the diverse sections of people can become the leader of the nation. Atalji always used to say follow your Rajdharma. This was Atal Bihari Vajpayee's personality. Now, if there is an attempt to change the path, there is bound to be problems."
He warned that if the BJP doesn't find an alternative to Mr Modi, the partnership will flatline. "We will not compromise on the principle of secularism... PM candidate should have an impeccable secular image," the Bihar chief minister said, denying once again that he would like to run for the country's top job.
His party asked the BJP to name its presumptive Prime Minister by December. It is clear it will not support Mr Modi, the top choice of the BJP's cadre
