| With eye on polls, BJP president Rajnath Singh to meet state unit leaders from tomorrow

| Beginning its preps for the general elections, Bharatiya Janata Party President Rajnath Singh will start meeting leaders from his party's state units from tomorrow. Top leaders of the BJP's state units will be coming to Delhi to meet Mr Singh from this week. According to sources, the BJP wants to be ready in case the general elections take place earlier than scheduled, given the fragile relationship between the Congress and the Samajwadi Party, which gives crucial outside support of its 22 MPs to the UPA government.
Mr Singh's first poll assessment meeting will be with the party leaders from the crucial state of Uttar Pradesh, where the BJP failed to make a mark in the state assembly elections last year.
On April 18, Mr Singh will assess the situation in Bihar, where the BJP forms the government with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's Janata Dal (United). Mr Kumar in a fiery 40-minute speech in New Delhi yesterday threatened to break its coalition with the BJP if it declares Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as its prime ministerial candidate for the 2014 polls
The BJP has hit back, saying the allies of the National Democratic Alliance, which it fronts, should focus on removing the UPA government, and not on Mr Modi.
On the weekend, the UPA government's key ally, the Nationalist Congress Party or the NCP, also said preparations for the general elections should begin. NCP chief Sharad Pawar said, "I don't think we will go for polls immediately or that situation will come immediately but we have to be ready.
