Why LK Advani is upset with the RSS
Why LK Advani is upset with the RSS
 INDIA , 11-June-2013  3:41:29 AM
BJP president Rajnath Singh has insisted that the RSS, which is his party's ideological parent, has played no role in Narendra Modi being hastily promoted in Goa over the weekend despite the absence of party senior LK Advani.

Mr Singh has on his hands a crisis of enormous proportions. Mr Advani has resigned from all party posts and is refusing to reconsider his decision. He has taken umbrage at Mr Modi being made the chief of the BJP's election campaign committee and is said to be extremely upset with the RSS or Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, which reportedly instructed the BJP to ensure Mr Modi was promoted by the end of its Goa conclave "with or without Advani."

Mr Advani is reportedly particularly angry with RSS leader Suresh Soni, who is said to have articulated that.

Mr Singh today said media reports about "RSS interference" were wrong. "I want to clarify, the RSS is not dictating to us," he said.

Mr Advani's battle with the RSS is not new. He cut his political teeth as an RSS man decades ago, but has in the last few years been among those in the party who have strongly resisted attempts by the Sangh to dictate what happens in the BJP.

The Sangh has repeatedly suggested to the 85-year-old that it is time for him to play a mentoring role and allow younger leaders to take lead the BJP.

Mr Modi being given charge of the BJP's mission 2014 is being seen by many as the next step towards the Gujarat Chief Minister being declared the BJP's candidate for prime minister in the general elections now months away. Many party leaders, including Mr Advani, reportedly believe they have better credentials for the job.

After he resigned yesterday, the RSS sought to remind LK Advani that "no one is above the party." RSS ideologue MG Vaidya said that he was "shocked at the way Advani handled the episode of Modi's elevation...I can't say what prompted him to take such a drastic step."
